How to Varnish Paintings 101 : A Guide for Artists

Varnish is a very easy way to protect your paintings over time! It is a colorless, odorless solvent that acts as a non-porous barrier between the painting and dust, UV rays that cause yellowing, and pollutants that will inevitably collect on a paintings surface as time passes. It also is a beautiful way to bring out the vibrancy of your paints while sealing the art with different finishes.
  1. Choose the right varnish: There are different types of varnishes available for acrylic paintings, including gloss, satin, and matte finishes. Choose a varnish that matches the desired finish of your painting.
  2. Prepare the painting surface: Clean the surface of the painting with a soft cloth to remove any dust or debris. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the varnish.

  3. Mix the varnish: Shake the varnish bottle well and pour a small amount into a separate container. Mix the varnish thoroughly to ensure an even application.

  4. Apply the varnish: Use a soft brush or roller to apply a thin, even coat of varnish to the painting. Start at the top of the painting and work your way down, using long, even strokes.

  5. Allow the varnish to dry: Allow the varnish to dry completely before applying a second coat. This can take anywhere from a few hours to a day depending on the humidity and temperature.

  6. Apply a second coat: Repeat steps 3-5 to apply a second coat of varnish. Make sure to use a clean brush or roller and to mix the varnish thoroughly before each application.

  7. Allow the varnish to cure: Allow the varnish to cure for at least 2-4 weeks before handling the painting. This will allow the varnish to fully harden and protect the painting for years to come. Cure times may vary depending on the brand, so check the label directions for best results.

Note: It's always best to test the varnish on a small area before applying it on the entire painting to make sure that the varnish is compatible with the paint.
